We are pleased to introduce you to the recipient of the Brian & Irene MacLeod Scholarship, third-year StFX University student and Antigonish native, Maddy Roberts. Maddy joined the MacLeod Cares team after completing high school and has enjoyed every summer working with the team at the Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home since 2020.

Over the years, Maddy has gained valuable hands-on experience, job shadowing nurses as well as getting exposure to the management team and their procedures, which has helped her reaffirm her choice in studying nursing. Direct patient care motivates her to complete her degree as she enjoys being able to speak with the residents and make a difference in their day, working one-on-one with them, and assisting with anything they may need. Being a recipient of the MacLeod Scholarship, Maddy is grateful not only for the financial support, but also the stability and security of guaranteed employment throughout the summer and having the knowledge that as soon as she graduates she has somewhere to go where she feels comfortable and can be on her feet and integrated with a care team right from the start.
In a recent interview, Maddy shared her experience with us saying, “There’s a huge visible group of people who don’t just look at the patients’ charts and hand out the meds and that’s it. MacLeod Cares employees actually care about the attention they’re providing to the residents. They go above and beyond to make the residents feel comfortable in their homes and also give them opportunity for independence.”
We are so proud of you, Maddy and love having you as part of the MacLeod Cares team. Keep up the great work!
